What others say about the
“Rediscover the Joy of Learning” Processes

The learning strategies and processes of “Rediscover the Joy of Learning” are being used in four different ways:

1. Individual students, teachers and parents use the book or audio tapes as a study guide in HOW to do academic tasks.

2. Schools bring Dr. Blackerby or Certified Practitioners of the “Joy” processes into their schools for “Staff Development Workshops” based on Joy.

3. Students are coached one-on-one or in small groups in Blackerby’s Academic Skills by Dr. Blackerby or a Certified Practitioner of the “Joy” processes.

4. Adult students, teachers, counselors, and parents take the “Rediscover the Joy of Learning” Certification Training so they can help other struggling students.

The following comments come from those who have used the “Joy” processes:

"“Rediscover the Joy of Learning” brings the enormous resources of Neuro-Linguistics to the process side of education and shines a bright light into the darkness. With systemic clarity, Dr Blackerby has modeled out the best practices of high achieving students and made them available to those students who currently struggle for academic achievement. The Joy Training is like receiving a birthday gift from a dear friend, one who knows you very well. It is wrapped in a very unique box and your curiosity grows and grows. You have saved it until last and when you finally open it you find exactly what you wanted and needed. Why couldn't I have had this as a child?"
Rev. Ron Watkins, Certified Joy Coach

"This book is an exceptionally useful resource for teachers, parents, and anyone who works with students. Don has a gift for writing in a way that makes it easy to understand and apply. The learning and memory strategies alone are worth the price of the book, and the section on motivation is excellent. I recommend it highly."
Charles Dorman, School Psychologist, Iowa, USA

“The year preceding Dr. Don Blackerby’s visits to our school, we were listed as a “low performing” school by the State Department of Education. As a result of the staff’s work, our students made significant gains by the next year. Our plan was so effective and positive that we continue to use it with a great deal of confidence. Dr. Blackerby’s contributions to this plan were significant and greatly appreciated.

I was personally very impressed with the practical implications of the Joy processes introduced by Dr. Blackerby in that they not only appreciably improved test scores, they also provided teachers an interesting, dynamic way of teaching subjects which all too often are dull and unexciting. With Dr. Blackerby’s learning strategies, once a child has demonstrated that he/she has learned a spelling word, word definition, math fact, etc., the teacher can expect that the learning has been internalized and will be retained with minimal review. For an educator who spends substantial amounts of time re-teaching material already presented, this fact alone makes the use of the Joy processes worthwhile.”
Ronda Fleming, Elementary School Principal, Oklahoma, USA

“I am so glad I found you. It took me five months to “hunt” the best possible support for my son (who had been diagnosed ADD) and I know it was worthwhile to bring him to see you. So far he is doing great. I learned a lot, not only to better help my son but also for myself. I’ll inform a broad group of therapists/docs/and educators in a chat room (focused on ADD among other things) about our experience with you. I want to do this because I am convinced that your methods are really superior compared to drugs for ADD.”
Simone Silvestri, M.D., Ph.D. and Parent, Michigan, USA

“This Joy Certification Course is life changing. One cannot enter it and not see its value within the first day. The expense for the knowledge and training was more than reasonable as the outcome is priceless—thank you!”
Janet Churchill, Counselor, Kansas, USA

“I was really inspired by reading “Rediscover the Joy of Learning” and even more so when I heard the audio tapes. I like the simple “cookbook,” down to earth approach. On reflection the techniques seem so obvious and it’s not easy to believe that they are not widely used already. I need to keep reminding myself how excited I felt when I first read/heard them!”
Martin Read, Teacher, England

“This training far exceeded my expectations! I have tools that will enable my students to dramatically improve their learning and comprehension.”
John Pesek, Ph.D., College Teacher, Delaware, USA

“Having spent 30 years in the field of education, I am not easily impressed by in-service speakers. However, It did not take more than 15 minutes of listening to Dr. Blackerby to realize that what he had to say was valid and useful for my students. My teachers have already utilized the techniques that he shared with us during his presentation. If funding can be obtained, we would like for him to come back next year for another in-service.”
Virginia Holmes, Elementary School Principal, Oklahoma, USA

“I am the mother of a thirteen year-old communication handicapped daughter, Kate, and also trained by Dr. Don Blackerby in Joy skills. I am writing of my daughter’s fabulous success story. Kate began speech and language therapy when she was just two. She entered our district’s acclaimed pre-school handicapped program when she turned three. She has been in special education classes since then, at present she participates in an in-class support program. Over the years, many varying efforts to improve Kate’s ability to spell were attempted, with varying degrees of marginal success. Once trained in Dr. Blackerby’s visual spelling strategy, I then taught it to Kate. She immediately went from struggling to get a 40% to studying to get 102%. (She receives two points for bringing in her study aid). She now studies on her own and achieves 102% consistently and even made the B honor roll. Has her belief about who she is as a student changed? You bet it has! Dr. Blackerby’s academic survival skills are the difference that made the difference for my struggling daughter. Now we have Rediscovered the Joy of Learning!”
Sharon McCarthy, Educational Consultant/Coach, New Jersey, USA

“Don is a passionate teacher who absolutely and thoroughly walks his talk. He seamlessly and easily gains rapport with anyone he meets regardless of age and this must have contributed much to his tremendous success in effecting change in his clients' attitude towards studies and the school system. My NLP skills seemed to have jumped several leaps just watching him do his "demos". His Joy programme is a must for those who want to make a difference in the lives of our youth".
Zainal Abidin Rahman, NLP Trainer, Singapore

“All who knew of my trip have been asking about the course, and about what I thought of it. They are enthusiastic and excited when I tell them of the course and all that I learned and experienced. My Mom wanted to know why she wasn't taught these things when she was in school! I expected to learn how to help my son overcome difficulties he is experiencing in school. I also expected to learn how to help other kids who are struggling, I want to make that my niche in counseling.

I learned very well how to assist him and how to work with kids. I learned "how to learn" in a way which I never knew before. I developed a confidence that I had not had before and know that I can apply all that I learned. I really learned how to use the “Logical Levels,” which I knew about but never applied like this. I developed friendships with people from around the world and share our love and support for each other even though we are not in physical contact with each other.”
Charmaine Tucker, Nurse and Parent, Canada

“We came to the Joy training with a vision of helping students learn how to learn, and we left with simple and effective ways to implement that vision, and in the very process were ourselves transformed.”
Charlotte Saji, LCPC (School Counselor and Academic Coach), Sharon McCarthy (Educational Consultant/Coach), John Pesek, PhD (Statistician and College Teacher), John Franklin Mitchell (Performance and Academic Coach), USA

“Although I have been consistently a top student, I have never felt confident whenever math, of any kind, was involved. Over the years, I have asked a number of teachers for assistance. I was usually told not to worry, I’d do OK because I worked hard. I never felt heard or understood with regards to this issue.

I almost didn’t pursue an MBA because I knew that math courses were part of the requirements. I decided to go ahead with the MBA and do my best. Although I received A’s in my other courses, any course with math was very difficult. I hired a tutor to help.
At the end of my MBA course work, I took the comprehensive exam and failed the financial portion of it. Nothing on the test looked familiar to me, even though I had spent 95% of my time studying financial information.

I decided to visit with Don Blackerby about my math difficulties. Don listed to my comments, then said, “I think this may be happening…” and proceeded to list a sequence of mental events that described exactly what I was experiencing. For the first time in my life, I knew I was talking to someone who understood what I was going through. After meeting with Don one time, I applied the studying techniques in preparation for my economics final. The test seemed easy and I ended up with an A. The professor told me that I had received the highest score on the test.”
Rita Crockett, Graduate Student, Oklahoma, USA

“Anyone interested in learning and helping others, especially children—then this Joy training is a must. Opened the windows of my mind and exploded the frontiers of my understanding.”
Carole Kinsey, Counselor and NLP Trainer, United Kingdom

“The feedback from Don Blackerby's book "Rediscover the Joy of Learning" is outstanding. Parents use it as a reference book and have let me know many times that it is so easy to follow. They could associate with many of the problems Don discusses and are relieved that someone has finally unraveled a solution to an age old learning problem that has been in the too hard basket for long enough.

I worked with a 14 year old boy just recently who was on Ritalin. When I asked him what he would like to achieve he said "To not have to take this drug." I let him know that there were learning alternatives out there and that I would teach him to learn in the way that he already uses but maybe he is not aware of it. After teaching him Don's spelling strategy he looked at me with beaming amazement and asked why the schools don't offer an alternative when for some kids their way doesn't work. By the end of the session he was so confident that he was almost working faster than I could give him the work. He eagerly took away spelling words to practice for homework and homework was something that before the session he was never eager about.”
Diane Gardner, Teacher/Counselor, Australia

“Rediscover the Joy of Learning” is the most important NLP training I have ever done. And the most fun! I also felt the most prepared to get out in the world and actually do what I trained to do. Thanks, Don! You’re changing lives!”
Sydney Sheperd, Therapist, California, USA

“I have been in public education for 35 years, the last 29 years as a superintendent of schools. Perhaps the area where we had the most gratifying success was in dealing with high risk students. The school district in which I was superintendent, established a campus where high risk students, dropouts, juvenile justice involvement, severe behavioral problems, low achievement, absenteeism etc., were assigned.

The staff was trained in the use of some of the Joy processes which worked beautifully with these students. The staff in turn taught the students Joy strategies which enabled them to become more effective students and communicators as well as deal more successfully with difficult situations in school, at home and at work. The staff and students were happier, better communicators and more effective at school, home and work.

I wholeheartedly endorse Dr. Don Blackerby and encourage the use of Joy processes in all phases of the educational process.”
Forrest E. Watson, Ed.D., Retired School Superintendent, Texas, USA

“All in all, I have had a great experience in the Joy training. I am going home confident and empowered. For the first time in nine years, I finally feel that I know how to help struggling students. I also know that the tools I am taking back will enhance the learning experience of non-struggling students. No one will ever know how many potential problems will never manifest themselves. Thank you, I am grateful.”
Judith Nelson, Teacher, California, USA

“I will use this to bring more light and laughter, promise and joy into the world—to help people discover their own uniquieness—to empower them, to restore to them their belief in themselves. To open people’s minds to the infinite possibilities that exist. To help them rediscover the joy of BEING!”
Audrey Boser, Parent, Canada

“Don, your model for changing the world is well on its way, fulfills the “Impossible Dream” for more than I or others can imagine. Not “100 and One Monkeys,” but like grains of sand that move with the tide to far and near places, now and in the generations to come.”
Jeanine Burton, Counselor, Missouri, USA

“I was very impressed by the completeness of the training. Not only did we get all the learning strategies and processes to help a student develop the necessary tools and a good attitude towards school, but the “How to“ for taking this training out into the world and marketing the program was really useful. Even more important than gaining these incredibly practical tools, I personally experienced a transformational journey (I really hadn’t expected this!).“
Janette Jeppesen, Voice Teacher, Oklahoma

“As I read your “dream“ on the internet, I had goose bumps up and down my spine. I knew that my personal commitment—my mission—to empower children to feel successful would be through modeling your success strategies. Thank you for a program that gives me enthusiasm, confidence and specific tools to enhance the journey of our children. I feel blessed to be a part of it!“
Kay Nuyens, Counselor, Michigan

“This training is a must for teachers, corporate trainers and parents. Don’s teaching method makes it easy to learn ways of help anyone to improvehis or her learning.“
Paul M. Brown, M.S., Mental Coach, Texas

“I had read your book and had grasped the concept but was unprepared to see the immediate changes that happened to the kids. The results of the Joy techniques are life changing.“
Adrill Hayes, Small Business Owner, Oklahoma

“What did I get out of the Joy of Learning class? Well, I would say I received one of the greatest gifts. Truly, when my family and friends asked “How was your week?“ I told them it ranks as one of my best life experiences (of course after marriage, children, etc.).“
Sheila Gormley, Michigan

“In over a decade of taking career and personal development courses, I have never taken any training that combined instruction in such a wide variety of practical skills with such profound personal growth work. I not only have experienced all of the Joy processes to feel how well they work, I know exactly how to teach others to do them too. Don is a masterful teacher and trainer, and this work is vital for students of all ages everywhere.“
Julie Mundt, M.Ed., Personal performance Coach, Massachusetts

“This training is not just about learning how to learn. It applies to LIFE! Many, if not all the things taught applies to everyday life. As a father of an ADD son, now14, and husband to a wife who has just underwent a year of breast cancer, including 8 rounds of chemo-therapy and six weeks of radiation treatment. Your seminar helped me more than I can express to handle the most difficult period in my life. You have a great gift, Don, thanks for teaching it.“
Rick Swyden, Small Business Owner, Oklahoma
